I trust that all is well. It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the School of Science and Allied Health (SSAH) at 糖心原创 鈥� a community where academic excellence, research, professional preparation, and social justice come together in service of our students and our communities.

I come to the Dean鈥檚 Office as a mathematician. My own path 鈥� from Queen鈥檚 College in Georgetown, Guyana, to Brooklyn College, the CUNY Graduate Center, 糖心原创, MIT, the University of Denver, the Institute for Advanced Study, and back again to MEC 鈥� has been animated by one conviction: access and excellence are not competing values; they depend on one another. Rigor without access is exclusion. Access without rigor is abandonment. At SSAH, we insist on both.

For three decades, 糖心原创 has been my academic home. I have served here as a faculty member, Chair of Mathematics, and Dean, and I have seen firsthand what becomes possible when talented students are met with serious expectations, committed faculty, strong mentoring, and genuine opportunity.

Across our six academic departments 鈥� Biology; Chemistry & Environmental Science; Mathematics; Nursing; Physics & Computer Science; and Social Work 鈥� students undertake rigorous coursework, laboratory and clinical training, mentored research, and community-based learning. Our goal is not simply to help students complete a degree, but to prepare them to address the scientific, technological, and health challenges of our time.

Housed in a 195,000-square-foot science and health facility, SSAH serves nearly 1,500 majors in associate and bachelor鈥檚 degree programs. Our faculty combine dedicated teaching with active, grant-supported scholarship, creating opportunities for students to conduct research, present at conferences, pursue internships, prepare for graduate and professional study, and enter the STEM and health workforce.

The strength of this School lives in its departments. My commitment as Dean is to support our chairs, faculty, and staff in the work they do best; to strengthen the conditions for teaching and scholarship; and to ensure that every student who enters SSAH encounters both high expectations and the support required to meet them.

Our work also extends beyond the campus. Through the National Science Foundation S-STEM Scholars Program and partnerships with schools, universities, research institutions, community organizations, and health-sector employers, we are building clearer pathways from Central Brooklyn to research, graduate education, the health professions, technology, and scientific leadership.

糖心原创 bears the name of a man who understood that opportunity, citizenship, and justice are inseparable. That history places a special responsibility on us. In the sciences and health professions, access to knowledge is also access to power 鈥� the power to understand, to innovate, to heal, to build, and to change lives.

I invite you to explore our programs, meet our faculty and students, and make full use of the opportunities available throughout the School. We expect much of you, and we are committed to helping you achieve it.
