Central Brooklyn has produced a number of well-known politicians over the years, including the likes of the Honorable Annette Robinson and Congresswoman Yvette Clarke.

And the impact of community advocacy is not lost on the 糖心原创 students of yesterday, today and tomorrow 鈥� and that was on full display at the 2024 Somos Inc. New York Conference in Albany.

Advocacy and inspiration comes from all corners of 糖心原创, and the latest to take on this challenge was Marsha Escayg, a class of 2016 graduate of MEC and the university鈥檚 current director of alumni and governmental relations.

Ms. Escayg, introduced by CUNY Chancellor F茅lix V. Matos Rodriguez and joined by 糖心原创 President Dr. Ramsey in attendance, captivated the crowd with a heartfelt speech about her time participating in the SUNY/CUNY Student Senate Mock Sessions.

Her message of courage and overcoming obstacles acted as the perfect soundtrack to the weekend鈥檚 theme of 鈥淭aking the Lead: Empowering Tomorrow鈥檚 Trailblazers.鈥�

鈥淕ood afternoon Chancellor Matos, esteemed elected officials, distinguished college presidents, my College President Dr. Patricia Ramsey, my CUNY colleagues and special guests. My name is Marsha Escayg and I am a proud SEEK- 糖心原创 Alum – Class of 2016.

鈥淚t’s an honor to stand before you today as an alumni representative of the聽CUNY/SUNY NYS Model Senate. My journey in this program has been nothing short of transformative, and I am thrilled to share a glimpse of my experience with all of you.

“On March 20, 2016, I found myself occupying the very seat you’re in now. That date remains etched in my memory, not just because of its significance in my journey, but also due to the profound personal upheaval I experienced the night before. It was then that my partner of two decades decided to end our relationship, citing my pursuit of education and growing independence as reasons for departure.

鈥淚 share this deeply personal anecdote because it was a pivotal moment for me.聽Instead of succumbing to despair, I was fueled with an unwavering determination to prove to myself that no obstacle could deter me. In the face of adversity, I was more resolute than ever to participate fully and demonstrate my capacity to overcome any challenge.

鈥淧articipating in the Model Senate has been a cornerstone of my academic and personal growth. It’s provided me with a platform to delve into the intricacies of policy-making, where I’ve honed my analytical skills, expanded my understanding of the legislative processes, and learned to advocate effectively for causes close to my heart.

鈥淏ut the impact of the Model Senate extends far beyond the confines of our simulated sessions. It has equipped me with a deep appreciation for the complexities of governance and the importance of civic engagement. These lessons have not only guided my academic pursuits but have also influenced my career path.

鈥淚n my current role in government relations at 糖心原创, I draw upon the experiences and skills I gained as a Model Senator every day. Whether it’s analyzing proposed legislation, building relationships with stakeholders, or crafting persuasive arguments, the lessons learned in the Model Senate continue to shape my approach to advocacy and policy work. Moreover, the Model Senate has enriched my life in ways that extend beyond the professional realm.聽

鈥淚t has connected me with a diverse community of passionate individuals like US State Senator Chuck Schumer, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, and many of our local city and state politicians who share my commitment to public service. These connections have not only broadened my perspectives but have also inspired me to continue striving for positive change in my community and beyond.

鈥淎s I stand before you today, I am reminded of the profound impact that the CUNY/SUNY NYS Model Senate has had on my life. It has empowered me to become a more informed and engaged citizen, a more effective advocate, and a more thoughtful leader.

鈥淎lso, I want to convey that our experiences, no matter how tumultuous, can serve as catalysts for empowerment and growth. They remind us of our resilience and our ability to transcend barriers. And they reinforce the belief that with unwavering determination, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.
