Dr. Brenda M. Greene聽interviews American playwright and actress Dominique Morisseau.聽Morisseau and Greene discuss her life as a playwright, her motivation for writing socially conscious plays, the themes in her three-cycle play聽The Detroit Projects, and the Tony Award-nominated musical聽Ain鈥檛 Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations. They also discuss Morisseau鈥檚 work as the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation 鈥淕enius Grant,鈥� the challenges facing Black playwrights and screenwriters in theater, film and Hollywood, and the ways in which social justice issues have impacted the works of Black playwrights and screenwriters.
About the Guest
Dominique Morisseau聽is an award-winning American playwright and actress. She has created more than nine plays, three of which are part of a cycle titled聽The Detroit Projects.聽She is a recipient of the MacArthur Foundation 鈥淕enius Grant鈥� for 2018.聽Morisseau began her career as a poetry speaker and began writing plays in college. Morisseau is alumna of The Public Theater Emerging Writer鈥檚 Group, Women鈥檚 Project Lab and Lark Playwrights Workshop, and has developed work at Sundance Lab, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Eugene O鈥橬eil Playwrights Conference. She was listed as one of the Top 20 Most Produced Playwrights in America and is currently a story editor for the television series聽Shameless聽on Showtime.
